Do I need a permit for a concrete driveway, patio or slab in Phoenix?
It depends on the project. The City of Phoenix permit brochure lists new or altered driveways in the right-of-way as needing a permit. It says uncovered patio slabs less than 30 inches above ground do not. Changing drainage on your lot does need one. Call Phoenix Planning and Development at 602-262-7811 to confirm.

How do I check a concrete contractor's license in Arizona?
Use the Contractor Search on the Arizona Registrar of Contractors website, roc.az.gov, to review the contractor's license record. Make sure the license class allows the work in your contract. Concrete work falls under classes such as R-9 for residential, C-9 for commercial, and CR-9 for both. You can also call the Registrar to confirm.

What is a stem wall, and how is it different from a footing or a slab?
A footing is the concrete base that carries a wall's load down to the soil. A stem wall is a concrete or masonry wall built on a footing. A slab is the flat concrete floor poured on prepared ground, at least 3.5 inches thick under the International Residential Code. Local codes and engineers decide the actual sizes.

How long before I can walk or drive on new concrete?
The sources used here do not give a set number of days for walking or driving on new concrete. The American Cement Association says most strength gain happens in the first month, and longer moist curing makes concrete stronger. Follow your contractor's instructions for your pour, since they know your mix and conditions.

What decides the cost of a concrete driveway, patio or slab?
Cost follows the scope of the job. At Firm Foundations by Jardines, driveways, patios, and slabs usually run $9 to $12 per square foot, and footings are quoted per job. Published rules set parts of that scope: slab thickness, the base and fill under it, permits, and drainage on your lot. Ask for a written estimate that spells out the price, the work, and who is responsible for permits. The Arizona Registrar of Contractors recommends this.
