How long before I can walk or drive on new concrete?
The short answer
The sources used here do not give a set number of days for walking or driving on new concrete. The American Cement Association says most strength gain happens in the first month, and longer moist curing makes concrete stronger. Follow your contractor's instructions for your pour, since they know your mix and conditions.

Concrete keeps gaining strength
The American Cement Association says most of the hydration and strength gain happens within the first month of concrete's life.
It also says the longer concrete is kept moist, the stronger and more durable it becomes.
The American Concrete Institute says concrete can usually continue to gain strength for a long period, as long as temperature and moisture conditions are suitable.
What curing is
The American Concrete Institute defines curing as action taken to maintain moisture and temperature conditions in freshly placed concrete so it can develop its intended properties.
Curing methods include keeping the surface moist, covering it with moisture-retaining fabric, or sealing it with plastic sheeting or a curing compound.
Hot weather
ACI 305R-20 defines hot weather as conditions that tend to impair concrete by speeding up moisture loss and cement hydration. These conditions are high air temperature, high concrete temperature, low humidity and high wind.
The guide says the precautions needed on a windy, sunny day are stricter than on a calm, humid day, even at the same air temperature.
Ask your contractor how they protect your slab while it cures.
More questions
- Is concrete at full strength after one month?
- The American Cement Association says most of the strength gain happens in the first month. The American Concrete Institute says concrete can usually keep gaining strength for a long period when temperature and moisture conditions are suitable.
- Does heat make concrete cure faster?
- ACI 305R-20 says hot weather speeds up cement hydration, but it also speeds up moisture loss from fresh concrete. It lists problems such as faster setting and a greater tendency for plastic shrinkage cracking.
- So when can I use it?
- Follow your contractor's instructions for your pour. They know the mix, the weather and the slab.
